Vaclav Havel was a renowned playwright and poet known for his opposition to Communist rule in Czechoslovakia. As an outspoken critic of the Czech government in the 1970s, he was imprisoned for nearly 10 years. Upon his release and the end of Communism in that nation, he became the first elected president of Czechoslovakia in 1989.
