Experiences

an imageCarl Wilkens was invited to go back to Rwanda with his wife, Teresa for the 15th year memorial of the genocide. While being back in Rwanda, he spoke at a church to about 1 thousand to 2 thousand people. He also saw different people talk about how some were still denying what happened was genocide and how some of the media portrayed it as not a genocide. He also took part in a documentary that was being filmed in Rwanda. While there he saw a survivor perform in a play about the betrayal at the start of the genocide. On April 7th, Wilkens witnessed the genocide memorial and spoke out with the president of Rwanda. He also took part in the candlelight program in the memorial. The memorial was placed at the spot where the Belgium soldiers were protecting three thousand people before they left and the people were slaughtered. Carl Wilkens focused his presentation on presence and witnessed how the Rwandans were silent in respect and admiration throughout most of the commemoration.
